Atlanta Manhandles San Francisco In NFL Play

Published by Ross Everett under sports

It’s obvious that the San Francisco 49ers are heading in the right direction under Mike Singletary, but you couldn’t tell by watching their game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The Falcons scored six touchdowns against the Niners, with running back Michael Turner accounting for three of the scores as Atlanta routed San Francisco by a lopsided 45-10 final score. It was the Niners’ worst defeat since a 41-0 loss back in 2006 under former coach Mike Nolan. San Francisco fell to 3-2 with the defeat while the Falcons improved to 3-1.

The NFL betting lines had the game listed as a ‘PICK’, giving the Falcons the ATS win with their easy straight up victory. It was the 49ers first loss against the spread this season, while Atlanta upped their record to 3-1 to the money. The combined 55 points went OVER the posted total of 39′.

After the game, the fiery Singletary apologized for cussing out former 49er and current Falcons’ lineman Harvey Dahl:

“I’ll put it this way: I wish I had more coaching etiquette. I don’t. I love my players and when someone responds about my players in a particular way, I may do some things I shouldn’t do. I have to get better at those things as time goes on. Even though the player was talking to me, I should not have said what I said. It wasn’t anything bad, it was just something that shouldn’t have happened.”

Roddy White set a Falcons’ record with 210 receiving yards, and was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on his second touchdown of the day. With his team in full control, Atlanta coach Mike Smith had to be amused:

“He didn’t hit the landing because if he hits the landing it’s not a 15-yard penalty. I told him if he’s going to do it, it needs to be Olga Korbut. And he looked at me like he doesn’t know who Olga Korbut is. Then I told him, ‘Well, maybe Mary Lou Retton.’ And then I figure that’s ‘86, he doesn’t know who Mary Lou Retton is. It went right over his head and my head.”

Smith admitted that he hadn’t been in top form so far this season:

“I felt like I haven’t been playing well up to this point in the season. Me and coach Smith had a talk. He was like, ‘You gotta get back to being yourself again. You gotta go out there and be the old Roddy. No pressure. Just go out there and play.’”

The Falcons will return home on Sunday to host the Chicago Bears, with Atlanta a -3 home favorite and the total set at 45′. They’ll play their next two on the road, traveling to Texas for a game against the Dallas Cowboys the following week and to New Orleans to face the Saints on Monday, November 2. The 49ers will have a bye this week before traveling to Houston to play the Texans on October 25. They’ll play at Indianapolis the following Sunday before returning home to take on the Tennessee Titans on November 8.

Sports Travel To The MEN

Published by Ruth Smith under sports

There are many venues in the UK that are synonymous with sports travel, such as Old Trafford for football and cricket, Wembley Stadium for pretty much every sport and Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium for football and rugby events. However there are few venues in the UK that can rival the Manchester Evening News Arena for such a wide variety of different sporting events.

The MEN is a gigantic indoor arena in Manchester that plays host to such an array of different sporting events, than any sports fan would find something taking place there to interest them.

One of the more popular events to take place at the Manchester Evening News Arena is wrestling from the WWE. Wrestling is a big business in the USA, and at least once a year the Superstars from the WWE travel to Manchester to perform for the UK crowd in either their Raw or SmackDown! events. Fans can see their idols, such as Triple H and John Cena, up close and personal without having to travel to the United States.

Another US favourite to take place at the MEN is Monster Truck racing. This larger than life sports event sees some of the legendary US monster trucks, such as ‘Bigfoot’ and ‘Gravedigger’, crushing a collection of cars live in the arena. Few venues are even large enough to accommodate such an event in the UK, and the Manchester Evening News Arena is one of them.

Other sports events often held at the MEN include boxing, where Manchester favourite Ricky Hatton has often fought for world titles.

Of course it’s not just sports travel events that makes the MEN Arena such a popular destination. The venue is also used for many concerts, ranging from pop music acts such as the X-Factor tour, to rock acts such as Nickelback.

NFL Flashback: Vikings Rout Cowboys In Playoffs

Published by Ross Everett under sports

When legendary quarterback Brett Favre announced his return to the NFL from what has become a seemingly annual flirtation with retirement, many second guessed the Minnesota Vikings’ decision to sign “The Gunslinger”. On Sunday, Favre and the Vikings answered those critics in the best way possible-with a lopsided 34-3 beatdown of the Dallas Cowboys. Favre threw 4 touchdown passes in the victory and the Vikings’ defense sacked Dallas QB Tony Romo six times in the blowout. Minnesota will now face the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship game.

NFL football betting fans also cashed tickets on the Vikings as -3 point home favorites. This was the shortest pointspread of the divisional playoff weekend and many thought that Dallas’ momentum would carry them to victory. The 37 combined points went UNDER the posted total of 45. Minnesota had gone UNDER in four of six games to conclude the regular season.

After the contest, Favre boasted that a playoff run was a large part of his motivation to return to NFL action:

“”This is what I came back for. Probably the most fatigued I got today was celebrating. I feel like I’m playing the same way. I have the same enthusiasm. As long as I’m out there, the enthusiasm and the passion that you see is real. And I know the guys feed off of that. Fans enjoy that, because it is real and genuine. Today was like this season: It’s been wonderful.”

Former South Carolina Gamecock Sidney Rice caught three of Favre’s touchdown passes:

“Same ol’ Brett. He’s doing thing he’s done since he first came in the league: moving around, getting the ball out, breaking tackles and even running down the field and throwing blocks. That just shows you how big of a heart he has.”

Head coach Brad Childress mixed up a bunch of metaphors as he took a swipe at the prognosticators who picked Dallas to win:

“The Tasmanian devils were coming from Dallas that were about to bombard the state of Minnesota and run through us like Sherman through the South. All of us felt it quite palpably.”

Cowboys’ QB didn’t have much to say in defeat:

“Any time you come in with the expectations and goals we set and don’t accomplish them, No. 1, it’s frustrating. Right now, it’s just hard to think the season is over.”

Cowboys’ head coach Wade Phillips had a similar take:

“It’s like the elevator falling from the top. It’s tough when it’s over. If you don’t win it all, you have not reached your goal.”

The Vikings will now head to New Orleans for Sunday’s NFC Championship game against the Saints. Minnesota is a +3′ point road underdog with the total set at 52′. The winner will advance to the Superbowl to take on the winner of the New York Jets/Indianapolis Colts contest.

Seattle Uses Second Half Push To Run Away From Denver In NFL Preseason

Published by Ross Everett under sports

Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck and Denver’s Kyle Orton both played fairly well in the first half, but the Seahawks reserves pulled away in the second half. The Seahawks improved to 2-0 on the NFL preseason with a 27-13 win over the Denver Broncos.

Hasselbeck completed 16 passes in 23 attempts including two touchdowns, though he was sacked three times. That was a big concern as he missed considerable time last season due to a back injury, but appeared to suffer no ill effects here. Still, the Seahawks starting QB said it was a traumatic experience:

“It’s just like I remembered- no fun. … I forgot how hard people hit in here. It’s just like a car accident. It’s part of the game … and it was probably good that it happened.”

After a rough opening weekend as the Denver Broncos starting QB, Kyle Orton recovered to post decent numbers. He completed 16 of his first 19 pass attempts including a touchdown before finishing 18 of 26 for 182 yards with a touchdown and an interception. After the game, Orton indicated that hes feeling confident about his play:

“I’ve got an awful lot of confidence right now, I really do. This is the best offense I’ve ever played with. This is the best talent around me that I’ve ever had. I just feel that my game right now is as good as it has ever been.

Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels was more reserved in his assessment:

“I think he acquitted himself fairly well. He played, you know, fairly well. There’s still obviously room for improvement. But he did what we feel he is capable of doing.

It would have been hard for Orton to have played worse than he did in the Broncos opening NFL preseason contest against the San Francisco 49ers last week where he threw three interceptions in his first three drives.

Seattle will get the NFL regular season off and running on Sunday, September 13th as they host the St. Louis Rams. The Broncos will travel to Cincinnati for a game against the Bengals on the opening Sunday of the regular season.

Choosing Among Golf GPS Units Made Today

Published by Max Pigford under sports

It was only a matter of time until golf GPS units hit the courses of the United States and other parts of the world. After all, golfers love gadgets, tend to be fanatical, are always looking for an edge, spend a lot of time replaying the game in the clubhouse, and receive a lot of golf-related gifts.

Knowing the distances from green to green, or from where you are in the rough to the middle of the green, is better than guessing and also makes it easier to select the proper club for each situation. Saved data helps in later assessments of which club worked best or how a hole could have been played to better advantage.

Previewing a course, plotting the hazards and measuring the distances to the greens, keeping the day’s scorecard and saving the data in your personal history, being able to track the length of your shots, and seeing hidden aspects of the course ahead are some of the neat features of a golf GPS.

There are GPS programs that can be installed on iPhones, as well. These often are quite comprehensive, work off the phone’s batteries, let you email your scorecard to your home computer or to friends, and can post a hole-in-one on Facebook or Twitter.

In making a choice of a handheld device or a mobile phone add-on, check out the features online and see how closely the application fits your locality and your specific needs. The amount of delay between asking for information and having it come up on the screen is a factor to consider; some phone applications take up to ten seconds to gather and display the information.

Replaying the game shot by shot in the Clubhouse later is much easier with the saved data in a golf guidance system. For example, having past scorecards and past shots in the saved menu can help you back up claims that otherwise might be dismissed as wishful thinking.

Golf GPS units have many features such as touch screens, ease of accessing menus and tools, fees, or free add-ons that you will want to check out as you compare the different models and types on the market.

Wondering just why golf gps units are so extremely popular? Get the inside skinny in our buy golf GPS guide on http://www.buygolfgpsunits.com

Are You A Sports Equipment Collector?

Published by Adam Baldwin under sports

There are many people out there who collect sports equipment as ornaments for their collection. They are usually sports buffs who might have a glass cabinet or a whole room dedicated to display all of their various sports collection. Some people just do not understand why there are people who collect such things. Some people even do not know a thing of the value in collecting sport equipment.

To these people, various sports equipment are considered pieces of history. In the western world and in many other countries, sports have usually brought the masses together under one banner. A sport is not only a past time but also a way of connecting people together. There are many instances when sports have brought people together, the football World Cup, the Olympics, the Rugby world championships to name a few. These events bring people together as a nation supporting their national team. Even the smallest piece of equipment from one of these events serves as a piece of history and holds a great deal of importance to sports fans all over the world.

Sports equipment collectors usually start this passion when they fall passionately in love with a specific sport. When they do this they also fall in love with a specific team. To these people, girlfriends, wives, cars, houses, and many more can be changed and replaced, but a favorite sport and a favorite team last till death. Look at association football supporters in Europe. They fall in line every weekend at the stadiums to watch, cheer, and support their favorite teams with one big voice. In baseball, a fly ball or a home run ball shot directly to the crowd is priceless. Those who catch these balls either become personal treasures and heirlooms, and they can be very priceless indeed, especially if these were balls from a home run record.

The thing about collecting sports equipment or collectibles is that it doesn’t matter what age an individual start accumulating, the passion or the drive has been boiling within for a long time already. Almost all of the time enthusiasts by no means thought they would commence gathering themselves. They usually chance on gathering kits, jerseys, and uniforms with the logo of their favorite teams. Some commence to learn the team chants or team music, especially in football. Several others go on to record and download these songs as well. This is also common in sports-minded families, with two or one parent having an influence on a youngster to engage in and support some sort of sport activity along with a sports team.

Often, sports collectors even go to great measures to capture or obtain a particular item of sports equipment or collectibles. To them these items carry a lot meaning and history. Should you feel that you belong to this category, do not be ashamed to get out there and begin collecting. If you are fortunate, and your team’s stadium is not too far away, collecting fly balls, or getting autographed hats or even baseballs may be easy and you are able to effortlessly make your collection. In case you are one of people who are miles away from acquiring a piece of the action, then organize the trip of your life to get to that arena and capture even just a single piece of history for your own.

Colts’ Owner Irsay Says Team Will Break Bank To Retain Peyton Manning

Published by Ross Everett under sports

In what has to be one of the least difficult front office personnel decisions in sports history, Indianapolis Colts’ owner Jim Irsay has confirmed that the team will sign quarterback Peyton Manning to a contract extension that could make him the highest paid player in NFL history. Manning’s current deal will expire after the end of the 2010 season, with the final two years having been voided due to his meeting a number of performance based criteria. Despite losing the Superbowl this year, the Colts have not wavered on their commitment to Manning as the longterm QB for the team.

You can tell that an owner is adamant about resigning a player when he tells the media that he wants to make him the highest paid player in league history, and Irsay did just that at the NFL’s Superbowl media day on Monday:

“You know it’s going to get done. I think it’s clear, and we’ll start on it this summer. That’s been the way we do things [to hammer out an extension when a player is entering the final year of his contract]. And it’ll be the biggest [contract] in history; there’s not much doubt about that.”

Not exactly the most advantageous negotiating position to make public that you’re committed to breaking the bank to resign a player. Then again, it’s not like Manning is a quarterback that can easily be replaced as Irsay emphasized:

“It simply comes to one question, and that’s replaceability. Everything is based on the replaceability factor. You make decisions based on who you can afford to target and keep. … Other guys you really want to [re-sign] you might have trouble doing it, because of what it costs you, and how much attention they’re getting [from other teams in free agency]. We don’t have that luxury and we’ve had to work hard.”

Manning’s agent, Tom Condon, has already had preliminary discussions with the Colts’ management about a new deal. Condon also represent’s Peyton’s brother Eli Manning, and negotiated a $97.5 million contract extension from the New York Giants for him last year. Peyton’s contract will almost certainly exceed those figures, with some speculating that he could receive $20 million per year with a $50 million signing bonus up front.

What You Need To Know When You Start Skateboarding

Published by Calvin Christensen under sports

Very few, if any, people are any good the first time they step on a skateboard. You’ll find some skaters who catch on to the basics in no time at all. And others need to have more time to get comfortable with the feel of it, the balance, and motions. If you’re beginning, you’ll pick-up some tips and little tricks to help you learn faster and better. So here we’ll cover some helpful tips you can use when you’re looking for your first skateboard and start learning to ride.

Takes a little time to know which foot goes where on the board. Whether you are right handed or left handed doesn’t really come into play here like it would in other sports. Instead you need to figure out which of your legs is dominant and which isn’t. How do you approach things? Which leg do you always use to kick something like a ball? Which leg do you normally begin with when you go up some stairs? If you begin to lose balance, which leg do you use to save your balance with? The foot/leg you use will go to the back of the skateboard. It has everything to do with your stronger leg, and really nothing to do with direction you’re facing.

Face your fear. A lot of newer skates are afraid to try too much. They quickly realize there’s not much to protect them from getting hurt while they’re skating. It’s really important to face this if there’s any hope for improvement. If you don’t face this you’ll always just be a bystander watching others have fun. The best way to conquer your fear is to practice as much as you can. When you practice you’ll find yourself getting more comfortable and willing to try. Learn how to fall correctly and how to mend scrapes and minor skateboarding injuries. You’ll improve faster if you can come to terms with these issues.

Learn tricks one at a time and start slow. But make sure you have the basics down, first. Don’t go skating down the stairs or doing big jumps. Start with small lifts and changing directions. You can jump the board, then change direction. Be sure to get the basic tricks under your belt before moving on to dangerous tricks. Remember, just like learning how to board at all, learning how to trick involves starting small and getting better over time.

Anybody can learn how to skateboard. If you’re willing to take your time and do it right, you can get to a point where you can do just about anything. Patience is key, you’ll get there soon!
